Untreated stormwater runoff is introduced to the top of the bioswale. It first encounters a splash pad, typically consisting of 2"-4" fractured rock around the inlet and along the bottom of the swale, preventing scouring and erosion. The stormwater then flows gently by gravity through the length of the grass-bottomed bioswale, effectively filtering out contaminants and holding them within the swale.
